27 Down: New Departures in Indian Railway Studies

Hitherto, the study of India’s railways has run along a few, increasingly well-travelled tracks. The central goal of 27 Down with its nine, new, railway-related studies—and much else thanks to its enclosed CD-ROM—is to explore some of the neglected dimensions of India’s colonial and postcolonial railways. The contributors, a stimulating mix of younger and older scholars, explore vastly different aspects of India’s railways, past and present. Railways and the nineteenth century capitalist development of South Asia, porters at a twenty-first-century Mumbai station, late nineteenth-century Hindi accounts of train travel, post-1947 films and writings that represent railways during the Partition of India, railway art on Bangladeshi rikshas, railway workshop labour, financing and managing the railways of North India, an exploration of why India’s railways did not contribute more positively to colonial India’s economic development, plus much more are found in the text and on the CD-ROM. Thus, social, political, cultural and economic dimensions of India’s railways are among the new departures in Indian railway studies found within this volume. 27 Down is a train with multiple destinations. Each exploratory trip is different but the contributors share an interest in the method of travel, India’s fascinating railways.

1857: Essays from Economic and Political Weekly

This volume marks the sesquicentennial of the events of 1857, in which multi-pronged, widespread and in many instances, organised resistance broke out against the British across north India. The contributions in this volume look at several aspects of 1857, and assess its events not merely in terms of their immediately, but in the repercussions that they had politically, socially, and militarily. The essays look at how historiography has accorded its own interpretation to 1857 and its effects, an interpretation that is changing even today. The collection has been grouped into five sections, each of which explores diverse aspects of 1857. The first section looks at historical perspectives and is titled "Then and Now"; the second, "Sepoys and Soldiers" looks at the military aspects; the third, "The Margins" is from the point of view of Dalits; the fourth, "Fictional Representations" studies how 1857 has been depicted in literature; and the fifth, "The Arts and 1857" looks at 1857 as it has inspired films, music, and fine art. Held together with a preface by Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, the essays in this volume---that range in theme and subject from historiography and military engagements, to the dalit viranganas idealised in traditional songs and the "unconventional protagonists" in mutiny novels---converge on one common goal: to enrich the existing national debates on the 1857 Uprising.

‘GOOD WOMEN DO NOT INHERIT LAND’: Politics of Land and Gender in India

‘GOOD WOMEN should not claim a share in the inheritance, even if they have no brothers….’ Notions such as this have, in their own way and over time, given the women in the Santal Parganas the resolve to wrest what is rightfully theirs. This is a powerful book in the way in which it unfolds the lives and anxieties of Santal women in the two villages of Dumka district, Jharkhand. From the very beginning, adivasi women come alive through separate life histories. They span different situations and social patterns but all of them relate to rights in landed property, and their own troubled identities in the backdrop of harsh living conditions, social discrimination and lack of state support. Land for the Santal women is not a mere economic resource. It stands for security, social position and identity, and in this men have a distinct advantage. Soon after, writing in a personal vein, the author unfolds how these anxieties of the Santal women resonate her own. The author traces the relationship between Santals and their land from historic times to the modern era when they have access to both the modern legal system and their own customary laws. She also examines the role of external agencies in this struggle – government administrative bodies, non-governmental organizations and political leaders. As modern influences crowd out traditional mores the author asserts that development is not always a benign process of social advancement but a highly political struggle for re-negotiating power relations between men and women, and among social groups. The use of a ‘community’ identity as adivasis has also been responsible for denying women rights to land in the context of the movement for political autonomy of Jharkhand. Based on rich ethnographic material, this sensitive book lays bare the reality of being an adivasi and an adivasi woman, in all its nuances, in the modern globalized world.

A Hundred Horizons: The Indian Ocean in the Age of Global Empire

Written around a set of sea voyages involving Curzon, Tagore, and Gandhi, as well as unknown merchants, labourers, soldiers, and pilgrims, this book asks us to completely rethink the nature of nationalism. It does so by arguing the importance of interregional arenas for extra-territorial and universalist anti-colonialism. This current of ideas, Bose powerfully demonstrates, coexisted and contended with territorial nationalism. He illuminates the interplay of nationalism and universalism in the thought and politics of a wide range of nationalists and patriots—both exalted and subaltern. This fascinating history of mobile peoples around the Indian Ocean also retrieves the nuances of patriotism in diasporic public spheres by focusing on the many fragments that trespassed the borders of colonies and would-be nations. The pilgrimage experience of Muslims from India, Malaya, and Java to Mecca and Medina; the overseas voyages of Tagore and Gandhi; and the diaries and epistolary records of ordinary travellers collectively reveal the reality of the Indian Ocean as a cultural ecumene, a distinguishable zone which inspired ideas and aspirations that challenged Europe’s hegemonies. This pioneering exploration of the oceanic dimension of anti-colonialism and religious universalism frees the study of nationalism from its landlocked state. By elucidating ideas that wafted across the Indian Ocean, Bose makes a rich and persuasive argument, namely that the intellectual history of the age of empire may best be studied in the framework of multiple and competing universalisms rather than mutually exclusive and conflicting cultural relativisms.

A Dictionary of Public Administration

A Dictionary of Public Administration is the first work of its kind in India as well as perhaps in the Third World. It covers the terms, concepts, theories and paradigms of public administration. Each term is defined and explained concisely but clearly. While a large number of entries are discussed in a few lines, many of them are very comprehensively treated, which is usually characteristic of an encyclopedia. The dictionary deals with the theory of public administration in all its sub-fields like administrative theory, personnell administration, financial administration, comparative public administration, administrative law and public policy. It goes beyond and includes the institutions and processes of Indian administration as well. All these features make this an indispensable volume for students and teachers of public administration as well as policy planners and analysts.

A Concise History of Indian Literature in English

For anyone interested in the story of English in India, or in the finest English storytellers of India, this is the essential companion. This book is a history of two hundred years of Indian literature in English. It starts by looking at the introduction of English into India’s complex language scenario around 1800. It then takes up the canonical poets, novelists, and dramatists, as well as a few unjustly forgotten figures, who have made significant contributions to the evolution of Indian literature in English. The book comprises twenty-four chapters, written by some of India’s foremost scholars and critics. Each chapter is devoted either to a single author (Kipling, Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, R.K. Narayan), or to a group of authors (the Dutt family of nineteenth-century Calcutta; the Indian diasporic writers of the twentieth century), or to a genre (beginnings of the Indian novel; poetry since Independence).Though the contributors are all experts in their chosen areas, this is a book for the non-specialist general reader. Biographical information on major literary figures is provided, and in most cases their work is historically contextualized. The chapters can be read selectively (for example, to follow the development of a genre) or in the order in which they appear, which is chronological.William Jones and Thomas Macaulay, Henry Derozio and Toru Dutt, Bankim and Tagore, Kipling and Naipaul, G.V. Desani and Raja Rao, R.K. Narayan and Nirad C. 8 Preposterous Propositions: From the Genetics of Homosexuality to the Benefits of Global Warming

Placebo cures. Global warming. Extraterrestrial life. Psychokinesis. In a time when scientific claims can sound as strange as science fiction—and can have a profound effect on individual life or public policy—assessing the merits of a far-out, supposedly scientific idea can be as difficult as it is urgent. Into the breach between helpless gullibility and unyielding scepticism steps physicist Robert Ehrlich, with an indispensable guide to making sense of “scientific” claims. A series of case studies of some of the most controversial (and for the judging public, deeply vexing) topics in the natural and social sciences, Ehrlich’s book serves as a primer for evaluating the evidence for the sort of strange-sounding ideas that can shape our lives. A much-anticipated follow-up to his popular Nine Crazy Ideas in Science, this book takes up issues close to readers’ everyday reality—issues such as global warming, the dangers of cholesterol, and the effectiveness of placebos—as well as questions that resonate through (and beyond) civic life: Is intelligent design a scientific alternative to evolution? Is homosexuality primarily innate? Are people getting smarter or dumber? In each case, Ehrlich shows readers how to use the tools of science to judge the accuracy of strange ideas and the trustworthiness of ubiquitous “experts”. As entertaining as it is instructive, his book will make the work of living wisely a bit easier and more reliable for scientists and non-scientists alike.

The essays assembled in this book illustrate the many different solutions that each country or organisation has developed. But today, the countries have realised that to move forward, international cooperation is necessary. Across The Black Waters

Across The Black Waters is probably author Mulk Raj Anand's best novel since Untouchable, for it exactly communicates the claustrophobic tension of men in the front line, the imminence of death, and the pervading sense of inevitability which is the source of the author's anger, and at the same time, is at the root of so much Indian fiction. The author makes a universal statement about the nature of war apart from the particular tragedy of the Indian sepoys in Flanders in 1914. His descriptions of brutality match in compassion and outrage, and perhaps also in poetic flair, those of Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, or David Jones.

History Of Modern India

History of Modern India presents an authoritative overview of the history of what was known as British India. The text is largely based on the author’s research on nationalism and colonialism in India and also draws from the works of eminent historians of the period. Challenging and revising colonial and nationalist interpretations of history, this book moves away from a largely political narrative to a social, economic and religious history of modern India. It explains how conditions in India during the eighteenth century helped the British East India Company establish its rule in India. It also gives us important insights into the primary aim of colonial rule which was the economic exploitation of India through trade and investment. The topics are arranged thematically in order to showcase the various forces that went into the making of independent India. However, in the entire arrangement of themes, the chronology of the period is enmeshed innovatively with the various forces that evolved both as a cause and effect of British imperialist rule of the subcontinent. The book also provides a detailed account of the nationalist movement and introduces us to the contributions of different individuals who were behind the nationalist movement. A comprehensive textbook for students of history and interested readers, History of Modern India is essential reading for a broad based understanding of the making of modern India.

Gandhi's Khadi

The book is a study of khadi, the fabric that successfully transcended its commodity status to become a political symbol. Using a fresh approach, it shows how an idea, determinedly pursued, can become a movement. Khadi acquired emblematic status during India's freedom struggle. Gandhi saw khadi as heralding real freedom to the millions of poor and marginalised Indians. Recreating a parallel history of the khadi movement alongside that of India's freedom struggle, the author argues that khadi's core semiotic lay in its being a commodity of resistance against colonial exploitation.

Hyderabad

The book is an economic history of the Indian princely state of Hyderabad through the late colonial era up to 1948. The study brings to life a region and its people, and while doing so, it grapples with the social paradigms and their bearing on the region under discussion. Recognising the colonial linkages and the structure of feudal relations, the work delineates the regionÆs virtual imperviousness to change. Subbarao argues that industrial and economic development was constrained by the socio-political system that supported and sponsored it. The industrial evolution is delineated over three distinct phases: the first phase between 1875 to 1919 when infrastructural facilities were set up, the second phase between 1919 to 1939 when the stateÆs efforts provided the institutional and financial support of industry, and the third phase, 1939 to 1948, saw initiatives not only to bring about structural change in the industrial sector, but also to introduce the idea of planned economic development..

Kashmir

Kashmir: Insurgency and After attempts to understand the nature and historical roots of the insurgency in Kashmir, and examines the causes and consequences of the blood-soaked rupture between the Kashmiri people and the Indian state. It delves into the erosion of the basis for secular and democratic politics in the state by narrating the history of its alienation from the rest of the country. The author argues that the politics of secession and the militancy of the Kashmiri urge for freedom and democracy can be best contained by an unhindered extension of the processes of Indian democracy to the state. This tract was first published in 1993 as Kashmir: Towards Insurgency. This extensively revised edition brings the Kashmir story up to date.

Krishna

A retelling of the story of Krishna, drawing from the puranas, folk tales and legends. Krishna means the dark one; it also means the one who attracts us to him. Divine, at the same time endearingly human, Krishna is at once the beloved child, the stealer of hearts, the loyal friend, the astute stalesman, the king, the valiant hero. This retelling in by Shanta Rameshwar Rao is simple enough to be understood by young readers, and evocative and thought provoking enough for adults. The author tells the story in such a way that we are both moved and charmed. There is a sense of the Divine here, at the same time, the retelling makes it very relevant to contemporary life. The book includes 16 paintings by the celebrated artist Bulbul Sharma. The line drawings are derived from the Sanjhi motifs of Vraj.

Engendering The Early Household

Engendering the early Household is a socio-historical study of the Grhyasutras, which are texts that detail rituals for the household. Compiled after the Vedas and the Bramanas, they represent how Brahmanical ideology came to be consolidated and how varna and gender hierarchies solidified. Using the texts, this book present how the Grhyasutras assimilated and 'brahmanised' commonly practiced rituals in a selective manner, highlighting only rituals centred around the household. This book also reveals the deep roots of Brahmanical traditions by studying how grhya rituals seek to ensure the birth of male progeny for the male householder. The Grhyasutras thus project a social construct in which households are to be considered the personal domains of householders, while bramanas function as the custodians of social order through the mechanism of rituals.

Education And Social Change In South Asia

Today education is a key factor for further development of most of the countries in South Asia, which after decades of independence are still lacking in literacy. The book focuses on the relationship between the state and society of South Asian countries, especially in the field of primary education. After dealing with developments under colonial rule, the major part of the contributions is devoted to the educational policy in South Asian countries post-independence. The papers reveal the relevance and crucial role of culture, religion, and ethnicity for imparting basic education on a nation-wide scale. Taking into consideration the complexity of societies of South Asian countries, the book looks at the social and political implications arising out of the educational policy of the state for the process of nation building. The book is a specific contribution from a South Asian context to the ongoing debate about the relevance of language, culture, and religion in the educational policy of a majority population and its impact on minority communities..

Friendship, Interiority And Mysticism

This collection of essays by Susan Visvanathan looks at dialogue as a way of dealing with difference, even enmity, crossing boundaries, and making meaning. In this context, the author looks at the writings of Hannah Arendt, Martin Buber and Simone Weil. These writers, all of whom are jewish, experienced the holocaust, the Second World War, and in the case of Buber, the question of Israel and Palestine. In the work of all three are woven stands of resistance, issues of suffering, and questions of meaning in an increasingly inhuman world. We also find issues of personal religious/spiritual faith-the faith of one's birth, and that of the other. While Simone Weil's work speaks of her work in the Resistance, and also her life among the workers, Buber attempts to solve the issue of West Asia through dialogue and acceptance and by seeing the land as belonging to both Arabs and Jews.

Empire In The Age Of Globalisation

Empire in the Age of Globalisation is perfect for students of globalisation and international studies. It is a comprehensive critical introduction to the relationship between US hegemony and contemporary globalisation. Many introductory textbooks on globalisation tend to be simplistic and conservative. This book moves things forward, providing a critical review of the globalisation debate. Kiely argues that we can only approach a proper understanding of the contemporary world order by linking globalisation to debates on capitalism, imperialism and universal human rights. He explores US hegemony in this light, showing how æliberal internationalismÆ cannot be separated from capitalism, neo-liberalism and US empire building. Covering all the major issues, from globalisation theory to international economics, cultural imperialism and global governance, this will be of interest to anyone looking for a refreshing analytical approach..

En-Gendering Individuals

This book explores how, in early modern Malayalee society, the emerging notion of the individual (as distinct from an identity based on jati, region etc.) was linked to the vision of a society based on gender differences. The process of individualizing thus also became a process of en-gendering. Social reform claimed to set `freeÆ people, to make them free individuals. In fact this process of individualization was implicated in institutions (education, home-making, parenting, political work etc) that were seen to be gender specific. As such men and women came to occupy separate, complementary domains, that were seen as `naturalÆ while education was seen, paradoxically, as a way to realize these `naturally genderedÆ selves. The book explores how social reform, notions of the individual, and the creation of a `genderedÆ individual came together in early modern Kerala..

Flat World, Big Gaps

Many mainstream economists have claimed that globalization creates worldwide growth, and that economic liberalization will lead to the economic convergence and lower inequality. It is now clear that since the 1980Æs the world economy has experienced slower growth as well as greater inequalities at the national level. The research in this volume provides rigorous empirical analyses of how economic liberalization has actually affected inequality, poverty and development in recent decades. Avoiding polemics and rhetoric, the book provides a balanced account of recent trends, the effect of globalization and liberalization, and the comparative experiences of countries that have pursued different economic policies and trajectories..

Dreams, Questions, Struggle

This book testifies to a multiplicity of struggles, individual and collective, through which South Asian women, across divisions of class, community, age and religion, are seeking to take control of their lives. It looks at the role of the British state, of relentless pressures of the market, and of the politics of South Asia on shaping gender relations over the last thirty years; and discusses how South Asian masculinities have been reconfigured by multicultural policies and by politicized religion. It explores the interaction of institutionalised racism and South Asian patriarchy in the context of immigration policy, state interventions such as Forced Marriage Initiative, and psychiatry. It analyses the experiences of low-paid Asian women workers in the global market; and looks at how dominant representations of South Asian women have and have not changed..

Engaging With The World

This volume represents one of the rare and comprehensive exercises in critically analysing diverse aspects of India's engagement with the world after the cold war. It is primarily written for the students and scholars in international relations who are trying to grapple with different aspects of India's foreign policy. The essays included in this volume deal with a vast spectrum of subjects and issues, encompassing the political, ideological, security and economic aspects of India's foreign policy. They are related to reforms and liberalisation, regional cooperation, human, national and energy security, and the overall strategy of India's foreign policy since independence. In the process, they unveil the complexities of relations between India and major powers like the United States, Russia and China, and shed fresh insights on India's ties with important regions including West Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and the Indian Ocean rim. India's ties with its South Asian neighbours, particularly Pakistan, are scrutinised with the idea of exploring the possibilities of promoting South Asian regional cooperation. The policy analysis and insights offered in the volume would be useful to students, scholars and policy-makers studying India's engagement with the world.

In this new work, John W. Hood makes a thoroughly informed critique of all twenty-nine feature films of Satyajit Ray. Structured along themes which the author has identified in Ray's movies, this reassessment analyses each film on the basis of its individual merits and lapses. Having taken us through the two ends of the spectrum of excellence and mediocrity that comprise Ray's work, Hood concludes his incisive study by affirming that ôwhat makes Ray ascend into the realms of the great is his profound sense of humanity.ö A highly accessible work on arguably the finest filmmaker India has ever produced, this book will engage not only serious readers of cinematic texts but also be a valuable leaning resource for students of film studies, all over the world..

Between Identity And Location

"What is thinking and what is theory? What is theoretical thinking and how does such a thought find its balance between specialist erudition and commonsensical intention? How is the relationship of theory to itself mediated by its practical commitment to instrumental Reason? What is the connection between theory and the proliferating discourses of ""postality""? Is academic-institutional theory capable of recognizing the reality of a world structured in dominance: between the West and the Rest, between the so called first and third worlds? How do the politics of location and subject positionality complicate and problematize the valence between representation and the object of representation? How do intellectual and pedagogical paradigms function in a global world that is simultaneously expanding and shrinking; between homes and locations, nationalisms and diasporas, ways of being and modes of knowing?"
